The film's power is largely derived from its two lead performances. Christopher Abbott delivers a quietly intense portrayal of Michael, a character burdened by guilt, whose facial expressions convey his introverted nature and his readiness to perform good deeds, even as he teeters on the edge of explosive reactions at the slightest trigger. Meanwhile, Barry Keoghan, who also shines in his other TIFF film, Bird, offers a remarkable performance as a character marked by volatility; as the narrative shifts to his viewpoint, he emerges as a vulnerable product of a tumultuous environment. Additionally, Colm Meaney deserves recognition for his role as Ray, Michael's detestable father, who exemplifies how the cycle of resentment can be passed down from parents to their children.
